The Masters Series of paintings number over one hundred to date. When I reintroduced myself to painting in 1995, after twenty years of "making a living", I began my exercises with the age old practice of copying master painters. I decided to limit my exploration to portraits and self portraits (I have expanded the subjects since then). I believe that all art is in essence self portraiture and the face as a subject has the most immediate connection with the art viewer. Although portraiture has been considered the "poor cousin" of genre throughout art history, I find it a most powerful subject by which to explore human experience and at the same time develop the more abstract plastics of art to develop "art for art's sake." Who would say that Rembrandt's self portraits are not among the greatest paintings of art history? The Mona Lisa? Whistler's Mother? Even Andy Warhol's Marilyn? Included here are works by Durer, Lichtenstein, Klimt, Matisse, Corot, Modigliani and Jawelensky. Why? Because I like these paintings and I can't afford the originals. An original Klimt just sold at auction for 100 million plus. My versions of master works are for sale at a much more reasonable price.
